CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston community leaders are coming together Nov. 17 for a family-friendly event to improve the city's safety.

"Y" Stand Up For Charleston will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 at the YMCA of Greater Charleston on Cannon Street from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is designed to bring citizens together for a fun time while educating the public on crime prevention, fire safety, and ways to improve the community.

"The City's Stand Up Charleston partnership event with the Cannon Street YMCA intends to bring together a broad range of citizens and to get them involved in making Charleston #1 in Community Safety," said Margaret Seidler of Stand Up Charleston. "A community is only as strong as the local residents who choose to stand up and make a difference, rather than settling for being a bystander."

Events scheduled for "Y" Stand Up Charleston include:

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – "Gun Turn in Program" sponsored by Stand Up Charleston. Anyone who turns in an operable handgun will receive a $25 gift card.

1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. – The Charleston Police Department and Charleston Fire Department will face off in a basketball game. Half time will include a performance by members of the "Y" Dance Program.

1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. – A number of activities including jump castles, snow cones and a cookout.

Parking is available at New Cannon Street Baptist Church, located at 46 Cannon Street.
