WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Colleton County rescue crews were forced to bring in some heavy-duty equipment last week to free a 6-year-old girl wedged in a small tree.

According to Colleton Fire & Rescue officials, emergency crews responded to the Black Street Early Childhood Development Center on Smith Street at 2:19 p.m. Friday after hearing a child was stuck in a tree at the school's east playground.

Rescue officials said the girl had climbed the tree, but wedged her knee in a fork of the tree as she slid down. School officials and firefighters tried to free her leg, but even the use of lubricants proved unsuccessful.

Firefighters had to bring in the Holmatro Hydraulic Spreaders to force the tree apart and free the child, who was uninjured during the incident.

The tree only suffered minimal damage as well, officials said.
