CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A fire destroyed one unit of an apartment complex, damaged four others, and left eight people without a home in downtown Charleston on Monday night.
Officials with the Charleston Fire Department say crews responded to a fire at the Bridgeview Village Apartments on 103 N. Romney Street around 6:15 p.m.
Emergency officials reported heavy fire through the roof of two units. Authorities say electricity had to be shut down to put the fire out.
Fire department spokesman Mark Ruppel said one unit was completely destroyed by the fire, while three other units suffered smoke and water damage.
Four units received minor smoke exposure.
According to fire officials, a total of 16 units were affected by the fire. Tenants in eight of those units have been displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
