CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston City Council will discuss taking over the task of extending Interstate 526 into Johns and James islands during a meeting Tuesday.
Council will take up the resolution to take ownership of the project from Charleston County Council, which currently controls the project.
Earlier this year, the state Department of Transportation Commission rejected taking over the project, upset that the county wanted the state to fund the $560 million project.
County officials tried to pass the project back to the state because there was no local agreement on how to finish the final link of the highway between James Island and Johns Island.
Riley says traffic will be a nightmare if the project is not built. He says if it's not built now, it will never be built.
If the road is not extended, Charleston County will owe the State Infrastructure Bank nearly $12 million.
