MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - The paths of the Santee Cooper Canal Park will soon turn into a winter wonderland of lights for the "Celebrate the Season" display. Right now, the crews are busy making sure each of the thousands of lights in dozens of displays are set up just right.
One thing that is making the setup much easier are new, pre-made displays. For many years the team worked to create displays from scratch. A process that was time consuming to say the least. Crew supervisor Todd Robertson says, "We used to draw a big diagram on the floor and he (Willie Miller) would bend all the metal, weld it together, install all the wire, install the lights, and that took weeks and weeks."
But with the need for more lights, bigger displays, and to save time and energy, new displays are pre-produced, but still custom made.
"They have a wide variety so you can pick from anything, or they can make what you want. like the fish and santa, we sent them a picture and he made it like that," Robertson says.
With the re-useable pieces, the displays continue to become more efficient. This includes the animation programming. Instead of operating lights off multiple timers, each display comes with its own built-in digital program to control the timing of the lights. This makes the process more efficient. Santee Cooper is also providing green power to run the lights, which are also energy efficient LED bulbs.
Celebrate the Season is also about giving back to the community. All money collected at the entry gate goes right back into Berkeley County charities.
November 30th is also a special night for Debi's Kids. Anyone who brings a new, unwrapped gift to donate to Debi's Kids/Salvation Army can get in free.
