James Island native Chris McGuiness was named the MVP of the Arizona Fall League on Saturday. The Citadel alum, who spent last baseball season in Double-A Frisco as part of the Texas Rangers organization, spent the 25 game AFL season as a member of the Surprise Saguaros.
McGuiness led the AFL in RBI with 27 in 25 games and his 4 homeruns were good enough to tie him for 2nd in the league. He was also an all-star in the AFL and won one player of the week award in addition to being named a Rising Star.
He was a 13th round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2009 MLB Draft. He was traded to the Rangers as part of a deal for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
