Senior Mike Black tossed in a game-high 23 points and dished out six assist to lead Albany to an, 83-55 win over South Carolina State Tuesday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
"We played a tremendous talented team tonight in Albany," said SC State head coach Tim Carter. "They (Albany) did a great job of executing their plays and hitting the open shot from the perimeter."
Senior Jayson Guerrier (6-4, 210) opened up hitting the first 11 points knocking down three straight 3-pointers to give the Great Danes a, 11-0 lead at the 17:10 mark. The Bulldogs cut the lead to six, 24-18 on a jumper by freshman guard Patrick Myers (6-2, 175) at the 10:43 mark.
Black's three-pointer followed by a layup by junior forward Gary Johnson (6-6, 200) gave Albany their biggest lead of the half 21, 39-18 with 5:49 left. Albany led 45-25 at halftime.
The second-half belonged to the Great Danes building a 29 point advantage off a layup by junior forward Luke Delvin (6-8, 230) at the 10:18 mark. Freshman guard Shaquille Mitchell's (6-4, 185) layup with 5:46 left in regulation cut the lead to 20, 69-49.
Red-shirt freshman Chris Page (6-5, 190) sealed the victory for Albany knocking down a three-pointer with 1:18 left to go ahead 30, 83-53. Albany held on to an 83-55 win over South Carolina State.
Carter stated, "We went up against a seasoned basketball team tonight and it showed. What it all boils down to we just have to play harder and get back to the basic way of doing things."
The Great Danes out-rebounded the Bulldogs 37-26, while shooting 51.7% from the three-point line going 15-of-29. Albany dished out a game-high 24 assists on the night.
Guerrier finished with 18 points, while teammate senior Jacob Iati added 14 in the win. The Bulldogs were led by freshman guard Shaquille Mitchell with 13 points, while senior guard Khalif Toombs and junior Adama Adams finished with 12 each.
SC State will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Newark, NJ to take on NJIT in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
