NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 28-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman have been charged for dealing drugs at a home, which is across from a middle school, after a 7-year-old boy called 911 after being left home alone.
The North Charleston Police Department charged Charles Daniel McLeod possession with intent to distribute marijuana within a half mile of a school and other drug dealing charges. Police also charged 34-year-old Tyra Lee Smith with drug dealing charges and possession of a stolen pistol.
On Sunday morning, officers responded to an apartment on Aster Street in reference to a boy calling 911 because he was home alone. A police report states that as the officers were responding to the home, the suspects' car also arrived.
McLeod and Smith told officers that they lived at the home and said they "just ran up to Walmart."Officers then escorted the suspects to the home to perform a welfare check on the boy.
According to investigators, when officers entered the home they were "overwhelmed with the odor of marijuana." When police asked if there was any marijuana in the home, officers say Smith retrieved an ashtray which she said contained several "roaches."
Smith told officers that she regularly smokes marijuana and there was no more marijuana inside the home besides what was on the coffee table.
Officers say when they received consent from Smith to search the home for any more marijuana, an officer said he saw loose green plant material "on nearly every surface including all tables and dressers."
According to police, authorities confiscated a plastic bag containing 2.9 grams of marijuana, a marijuana grinder, rolling papers, several large stacks of cash and a large zip lock bag containing marijuana.
Investigators also recovered a stolen pistol in the kitchen cabinet. Smith told officers that the drugs and guns were hers. She said that the gun was given to her by "some dude named Patrick."
McLeod said that he knew there was marijuana in the home. Both of the suspects also told officers that they knew Morningside Middle School was located next to their home.
The child was released to his grandmother.
