Live 5 Most Wanted fugitive surrenders to authorities for child rape

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A 55-year-old man accused of raping a child surrendered to deputies last week.

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested 55-year-old Henry Wilford Brockington who was wanted for first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Investigators say Brockington surrendered after he saw himself on television.

"The report came to us through the Lowcountry Children's Center. The victim was taken there and was interviewed by one of their forensic investigators," said Detective Christina Smith.

Smith said the crime occurred in 2007 but the accuser came forward two months ago.

"When you have a small child 8 or 9 years old, sometimes they're afraid to tell their parents what's going on," Smith explained.

Deputies went to Brockington's last known address, but he wasn't there.

"If he's living at his last known address, we leave a business card and we ask them to contact us. If he's living there he knows the sheriff's office is looking for him," Smith said.

Smith said Brockington has a minor criminal record, but with that sex assault charge hanging over his head, he should be considered dangerous.

"You never know what he's thinking or what his next move may be."
