Traffic stop leads to teen's arrest for stolen handgun

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Officers arrested a 16-year-old boy following a traffic stop in Walterboro where a stolen handgun was found under the passenger seat of an SUV.

On Saturday night, an officer with the Walterboro Public Safety Department stopped a Ford Explorer on Kimbrell Street after he observed that the driver and passenger were not wearing seatbelts.

The officer said after he saw marijuana debris on both of the subjects in the car, he proceeded to do a probable cause search.

A police report states that the officer found a gun underneath the passenger seat. The 16-year-old boy told the officer that the gun belonged to him.

Police say a check of the gun revealed it to be reported stolen.

The teen was then arrested and released to his grandmother.
