MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

Mount Pleasant officials say Maj. Carl Ritchie will take over as police chief starting Jan. 1.

Ritchie will be taking over the position from departing police chief Harry Sewell who is retiring on Dec. 31.

"It's a humbling process and I'm honored to continue to serve our citizens," Ritchie said. "It's an incredible feeling."

Ritchie began his law enforcement career in 1988 as a police officer with the North Charleston Police Department.

According to Mount Pleasant officials, Ritchie accepted a position with the Mount Pleasant Police Department as a police officer in 1989 and rose through the ranks to his current assignment as Major of the Operations Bureau.

Sewell has been with the department for 22 years, and according to Mt. Pleasant Town Administrator Eric DeMoura, "had an extraordinary impact on [the] community."

Sewell said he intends to go into the ministry following his retirement.
