Andrews man cashes $2 million winning lottery ticket

ANDREWS, SC (WCSC) -

A man living in the small town of Andrews isn't going to let winning the lottery change him.

"I don't feel much different," he admitted to South Carolina Education Lottery officials in Columbia on Friday awaiting his check for $2 million.

He won the prize off a Powerball ticket he purchased from the H & S Shoppe on E. Main St. in Andrews for a shot at the record-setting $587.5 million jackpot that grabbed headlines last week.

"I wasn't even dreaming about winning," he said.

He awoke Thursday morning to hear to his grandson screaming Grandpa won the Lottery. He hurried out of bed and felt his heart leap out of his chest as he was rushing to check his Powerball® ticket. The first five numbers on his ticket were indeed the winning numbers:5, 16, 22, 23 and 29.

"I've always helped my family in every way I could," he said trying to explain why he was lucky enough to win. He went on to say he's loaned money not expecting anything in return. He could only speculate his past generosity was being rewarded.

Aside from taking care of their house payment, the winner and his wife don't expect to make any big changes in their life.

The Andrews winner was one of three South Carolina Education Lottery players to successfully match the first five numbers drawn Wednesday night. Odds of doing so are 1 in 5,153,633. Had these winners matched one more number, the red Powerball, a share of the record-setting $587.5 million jackpot would have been theirs.

Paying the extra $1 for PowerPlay increased his would-be $1 million prize to $2 million.

H & S Shoppe in Andrews received a commission of $20,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
