Charleston Rep. Leon Stavrinakis was appointed by House Speaker Bobby Harrell to the powerful House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

The Ways and Means Committee is the House Committee charged with forming the state budget each year.

Stavrinakis previously served on the House Judiciary Committee.

Stavrinakis expressed his pleasure over the appointment, saying, "It is a great honor to be given the responsibility of serving on the Ways and Means Committee. I look forward to using this position to make sure Charleston has a strong and influential voice in budget negotiations. I am a fiscal conservative and I plan on continuing my fight for lower taxes, reduced spending, and a more efficient state government. I am grateful to Speaker Harrell and my colleagues in the House for having the confidence in me to taken on such a enormous task."

Stavrinakis has served in the House since 2006. He was also elected by his peers to serve on the House Ethics Committee this week.
