COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina forestry officials are inviting people to plant trees this weekend in celebration of Arbor Day.
The state Forestry Commission says people can come to the education center at Harbison State Forest in Columbia on Saturday for a day that includes a hike and presentations on wildlife.
There's also information about fighting forest fires, as well as the opportunity to plant a longleaf pine seedling in the forest.
Arbor Day is celebrated the first Friday in December, but these events are being held to give more families the opportunity to participate.
ArborGen is a Ridgeville-based company that is helping put on the festival. The company is also donating 75,000 seedlings to the College of Charleston Foundation to support forest conservation and restoration efforts at Dixie Plantation near Charleston.
