Local school districts release statements on tragic shooting

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Local school districts released statements on Friday regarding the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School:

The Berkeley County School District released the following statement:

On behalf of the entire Berkeley County School District, our hearts ache for the parents, students, teachers, administration and community in Connecticut.  This horrific act of violence against children and the school community is unexplainable.  It was, according to national news reports, a very localized incident and has no direct connection to our school district.

At Berkeley County School District student and staff safety is our number one priority; we will use this opportunity to talk to students and parents about safe school behavior next week.  Additionally, we work with local law enforcement to be prepared to work with speed and efficiency in the event a school in Berkeley County is ever breached inappropriately.

At this time, BCSD is not taking extraordinary precautions of police or security above and beyond the normal presence in light of the tragedy in Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School as our school day is at or near a close in most of our schools.

The Charleston County School District released the following statement:

School security and the safety of our students is always a top priority of CCSD. At the beginning of each school year, our principals and building staff review safety and crisis protocol procedures. Today's tragic school shooting in Connecticut underscores the importance of having clear, district-wide safety procedures in place.

At this time, there is no indication of a threat to any CCSD school or the school district. Our security team is monitoring the situation and they are in direct contact with local, state and federal law enforcement authorities. Our district crisis team -- consisting of district guidance counselors and other mental health professionals -- is ready to mobilize at a moments notice.

Pat Raynor with Dorchester District 2 released the following statement:

We offer our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy today. The entire community is in the thoughts and prayers of everyone here at Dorchester School District Two.
