JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Police say they arrested a peeping tom last Friday, months after a concerned neighbor reported suspicious activity outside his apartment.
According to a Charleston Police Department incident report, officers responded to an apartment complex at 333 Fleming Road on Sept. 26 around 1 a.m. after receiving reports of a prowler.
When they arrived, a 39-year-old man told police he heard a noise outside his open upstairs bedroom window. The man said he looked outside to find a man standing on the roof of a shed which stands adjacent to the apartment complex.
The man said it looked like the prowler was staring into the bedroom window of his neighbor, a 27-year-old woman. The man said the suspect then jumped down from the roof, so he went outside to his front door.
The neighbor said he thought he saw the prowler walk by and so he confronted him. But the suspect told him he had not been walking on a roof and was on his way to a friend's house on Fleming Road.
The man told police it did not make sense that the suspect would take a route in front of his building to go to Fleming Road.
The man described the suspect as being a dark-skinned black male appearing to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The man said the suspect spoke with a Geechee accent.
Police then interviewed the 27-year-old woman who lived next door. She told police she had heard unusual noises outside her bedroom window for the past three or four nights.
She also said she heard loud thumps on the roof of the shed that evening so she turned on her bedroom light. It was at that time investigators said they believed her neighbor had seen the suspect jump down from the shed.
Following a subsequent investigation, Charleston police arrested 29-year-old Damore Middleton last Friday and charged him with eavesdropping/ peeping/ voyeurism.
Middleton lives in the same apartment complex of the victim, according to police.
He was granted a $1,092 bond but remains behind bars on Monday.
