72-year-old cab driver dies after cab catches fire

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 72-year-old cab driver died after his car caught on fire near a toll booth on Hilton Head Island.

Investigators say Daniel Parker Sr. died Wednesday of smoke inhalation.

Highway Patrol senior trooper Bridget Wyant says the fire likely started after Parker hit wooden debris on the Cross Island Parkway that flattened a tire and punctured the gas tank.

Witnesses saw Parker make a U-turn and drive back through the toll booth before pulling over. The trooper says one witness tried to get Parker out, but the fire was too intense.

Daniel Parker Jr. says his dad moved to the island in 1994 from Brooklyn, New York. The avid golfer was a third-degree Knight of Columbus and an Ancient Order of the Hibernians member.
