Christmas cookies may have saved woman's life

CHESTERFIELD, MO (KSDK/CNN) - The decision to go bake Christmas cookies may have saved the life of a Missouri woman.

Authorities say strong winds brought an oak tree down on top of the woman's house in Saint Louis County Thursday afternoon.

A large branch smashed right through a window where the homeowner had been sitting only minutes before.

The woman said she had just gotten up and gone to the kitchen to bake Christmas cookies when she heard the crash.

"She was sitting pretty much where the tree came through, kind of a bigger bay window in the back, busted all the windows out, a lot of drywall that came down off of the ceiling. It's a vaulted ceiling," said Capt. Chris Overy, of the Monarch Fire Protection District.

Firefighters say the tree caused so much damage to the house that the woman won't be able to go back inside until a structural engineer can determine if it's safe.

A neighbor has offered to let the homeowner stay with her.
