Trident United Way offering free tax prep at schools

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It's time to get your 2012 finances in order and think about the tax consequences. That's true even for low- and moderate-income families. Working families with income under $57,000 will be able to access free tax preparation at numerous sites throughout the Lowcountry after the new year.

Those families may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, worth as much as $5,000.

This tax season, Trident United Way is teaming up with The Benefit Bank – SC to provide free tax preparation at schools throughout the region.

Starting Jan. 1, the following school sites have personnel trained to use The Benefit Bank: Memminger, Mary Ford, James Simmons, St. Stephen, Sanders Clyde, North Charleston and Chicora Elementary, and Sedgefield Intermediate.

That will complement the free tax preparation efforts of Trident Urban League and the AARP.

Last year, nearly 2000 local families received $2.9 million in refunds. With more sites and volunteers this year, the coalition of groups supporting free tax service hopes more people can take advantage.
