JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department says a 26-year-old Edisto Island man admitted to firing gun shots into the air outside a home on James Island on New Year's Eve.
Investigators charged Willie Jamaal Williams for discharging a firearm within the city limits.
Around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to a home on Chipley Terrace in reference to shots fired.
Witnesses told officers that they saw three people shooting guns into the air.
Police say they managed to find one of the suspects, Williams, who first denied the allegations but then confessed to shooting shots in the air with his Smith and Wesson .40 caliber pistol.
A police report states that officers found eight .40 caliber spent shell casings in the area.
Officers also confiscated another .40 caliber pistol from a man who witnesses say also fired gun shots in the air during the night. The owner of the gun said he did not fire any guns and gave police his weapon.
Police are continuing the investigation.
