CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Police say they arrested a 26-year-old man after he was caught with a loaded gun inside a bar on Market Street on New Year's Day.

According to a Charleston Police Department incident report, officers responded to the bar located at 36 North Market Street just before midnight Tuesday after a manager flagged them down.

The manager told police he wanted a man removed from the bar. Police said they walked inside to find 26-year-old Alton Edward Schipmann engaged in a shouting match with another man.

Officers said they detained Schipmann, who had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, and asked him if he was carrying anything.

The report states Schipmann told them, "Yes, I have a gun, but it's ok because I have a concealed weapons permit." Police took Schipmann's Ruger .380 pistol, which had a full magazine and one round in the chamber.

Schipmann was charged with unlawful carry of a firearm in a bar and public disorderly conduct.

He is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
