BOILING SPRINGS, SC (WYFF) -

A sex charge against a former Boiling Springs High School teacher has been dropped.

Court documents show the sexual battery with a student charge against Abby McElhenny was dropped last month.

Neither the solicitor's office nor McElhenny's lawyer would talk to the newspaper about why the charge was dropped.

McElhenny was 23 when she was arrested in June 2011. She was a Spanish teacher at the high school.

Superintendent Scott Mercer said that McElhenny coached varsity, co-ed swimming teams at Boiling Springs High.

Authorities at the time said she exchanged 782 text messages with a teenage male student over five days.

A family friend told the boy's mother about seeing her son with a woman at the Spring Fling, so the mother did some of her own research, and found out about McElhenny.

The boy initially told his mother that he was dating a Furman student named Abby, but the mother said she found out that was not true. Once she determined that McElhenny was the woman, the mother called deputies.
