COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A man was critically injured Saturday night after being ejected from a pickup during a fiery wreck west of Walterboro, authorities say.

Colleton Fire & Rescue officials said they responded to the 4800 block of Sniders Highway near the intersection of Cane Street just before 10:30 p.m. They arrived to find flames tearing through a pickup, which had crashed into a power pole, causing the pole to break into three pieces.

Firefighters extinguished the flame but no one was found inside the remains of the smoldering truck.

Crews then searched the area, and a man was found unconscious about 15 feet into the woods, about 35 feet from the pickup.

Authorities believe the man, who was suffering from hypothermia, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to Medical University of South Carolina for treatment to his serious injuries.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Witnesses also reported seeing a person running away from the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
