GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

Goose Creek City Council approved a smoking ban by a vote of four to three Tuesday night. The ban will go into effect on July 1 to give businesses time to make adjustments.

The ban will make it illegal to smoke in public places and places of employment within city limits.

Smokers would have the option of smoking on porches and decks, as long they are 10 feet away from the entrance of the building. Those caught smoking in public facilities or businesses would face a fine of $10 to $25.

The ban passed its first reading last December in a close vote of four to three.

Goose Creek, along with North Charleston, is one of the only cities in the state that allows smoking in public places.

Charleston County Council enacted a ban on unincorporated parts of the county last year. Charleston, Summerville, and Mt. Pleasant also have smoking bans in place.
