COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -
A Colleton County Sheriff's Office deputy was injured after a truck he was chasing stopped and backed into his patrol car.
Around 1:45 a.m. on Friday, a deputy saw a white Ford F-250 truck pulling a large trailer on Maple Ridge Road. The deputy said he attempted to stop the vehicle after the truck passed over the center line.
The truck then sped up, swerved several times and drove down the middle of the lane.
An incident report states that the truck stopped at an intersection and backed into the deputy's car, disabling the engine and deploying the patrol car's airbags. The deputy was transported to Colleton Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The truck then took off on Pleasant Grove Road. Deputies then found the trailer abandoned on a Westvaco dirt road off Three Mile Road where the gate going into the property was damaged.
Authorities say they eventually found the truck on fire on I-95 near mile marker 62.
Deputies found people in the area and took them into custody. Officials with the sheriff's office say the individuals are still in custody until the investigation is completed.
Investigators say it's not known if the truck or trailer was stolen. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (843) 549-2211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
