Grant helps boost DUI enforcement in Berkeley County

Posted: Updated:
BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a grant that will be used to help reduce DUI-related fatalities.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Office of Highway Safety has awarded the sheriff's office a $99,104 grant. The grant will be used to add another deputy to the Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.) Team, according to Berkeley County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Moon.

In addition to paying for the additional officer's salary, the grant will also pay for equipment.

Since the H.E.A.T. Team was implemented in November of 2009, the fatality rate has dropped 25%, according to Moon.
