College of Charleston sophomore forward Adjehi Baru (Abidjan, Ivory Coast) has been named Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for all games played on Jan. 8-14 by the league office on Tuesday.
Baru recorded three conference double-double performances last week in conference play as the Cougars went 2-1 with wins over Chattanooga (86-59) on Jan. 12 and The Citadel (73-69) and Jan. 14 for a current tie for first place with preseason favorite Davidson in the South Division.
It marked his first career weekly honor and a career-best stretch for Baru, who had previously had back-to-back double-doubles on two occasions this year. Baru shot a team-best 56.7 percent from the floor (17-of-30), an improved 76.5 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-17) and averaged a team-leading 15.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
He turned in 18 points and 11 rebounds versus Samford on Jan. 10, 13 points and 10 rebounds against Chattanooga on Jan. 12 and 16 points and 12 rebounds at The Citadel on Jan. 14 – which kept the Cougars' road win streak intact at an undefeated 6-0 on the season.
Baru has produced five double-doubles this season and six overall for his career. He is currently leading the Southern Conference in rebounding (9.2 rpg) which ranks in the top 50 among current NCAA rebounding leaders. Baru also made a highlight-reel, alley-oop dunk against the Mocs worthy of consideration for ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10.
Other top performers in the SoCon included Appalachian State's Nathan Healy, The Citadel's Matt Van Scyoc, Davidson's Clint Mann, Elon's Lucas Troutman, Georgia Southern's C.J. Reed, Samford's Raijon Kelly, Western Carolina's Trey Sumler and Wofford's Karl Cochran.
