BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

The Berkeley County coroner says a 62-year-old motorcyclist was killed Wednesday evening after he was run over by a sedan on Highway 17-A near Goose Creek.

Coroner Bill Salisbury said Allen James, of Charleston, was riding north, along with some other motorcyclists, on Highway 17-A near Highway 176 when the wreck happened at 6:30 p.m.

James laid his bike down in an attempt to avoid a collision and was ejected and run over by a sedan traveling in the same direction, Salisbury said.

The 62-year-old was taken to Trident Hospital where he later died from head and body trauma.

Salisbury said the death will be ruled accidental, and James was not wearing a helmet.

The accident was investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the Goose Creek Police Department.

Highway 17-A was shut down for several hours while authorities cleared the scene.
