CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
North Charleston firefighters have remained on scene Thursday night after they contained a brush fire near I-26 in the area of College Park Road exit.
Officials with the Old Fire Department, who are assisting the North Charleston Fire Department, say the fire is out for the most part while checking for hot spots in area. It took four hours for firefighters to contain the blaze.
Authorities say the blazed started Thursday morning and that heavy smoke from the fire slowed traffic down in the area. Authorities had activated signs to notify drivers in the area of the road conditions.
Officials say there is possibility for smoke conditions to continue across the I-26 though out the night depending on the wind conditions.
Fire officials say a group of abandoned mobile homes has been destroyed by the fire.
According to officials, 50 acres were on fire and numerous fire departments responded.
