CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A building contractor was shocked after making contact with a power line on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston on Friday, officials say.

Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said the worker was injured at 382 Meeting Street, at the former Courtney Middle School building, which is between Mary and Ann streets, just before 2 p.m.

When crews from the Charleston Fire Department arrived, they found a worker laying on the roof. Workers said that the victim was operating a concrete float machine with an extension pole when the victim came in contact with a power line.

Emergency responders and the construction crew worked together to create an exit path from the roof. According to emergency responders, the building is currently undergoing significant renovation and expansion.

Francis said EMS took the worker to Medical University of South Carolina.  His condition is unknown at this time.
