GULF SHORES, Ala. (WCSC/AP) -

Investigators in Alabama say the remains of a man found at a beach in Gulf Shores last September belonged to a 31-year-old Summerville man.

Detective Sgt. Jason Woodruff of the Gulf Shores Police Department said bones found near the state pier belonged to Eric Pye who was last seen in the waters off Orange Beach this past summer.

According to Woodruff, the identification of the body happened in late December after Pye's mother provided a DNA sample which investigators used to positively identify Pye.

On June 24, 2012, authorities responded to a distress call in Orange Beach after reports indicated Pye was wading near the beach's edge when the backwash of a large wave dragged him into the Gulf of Mexico.

Woodruff says a search and rescue operation was conducted at that time involving local authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard.
