NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt celebrated his retirement on Friday.

He announced last year  he was leaving his position to take care of his mother in Kansas.

Mayor Keith Summey and city council hosted the party at the Felix Davis Community Center.

"It's kind of closing a chapter, it's been a great 11 years, I love this city, I love the people in this city," Zumalt said."I think the police department has gained traction on the respect factor and professionalism and they've really done a good job reducing crime."

Eddie Driggers will take over for the chief next week and will be sworn in Monday morning.

Driggers was hand picked for the position by Mayor Summey. Driggers has more than 30 years experience in law enforcement.
