NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

North Charleston police say the suspect in Monday's six-car pile-up on I-526 that took the life of a 27-year-old woman was seen by a witness throwing alcoholic beverages over the side of the interstate following the accident.

Authorities have charged Arnold Williams of Latta, SC with reckless homicide. Williams was given a $100,000 bond.

Police say the accident happened around 12:30 p.m. following an earlier accident on Monday. Investigators say as traffic began moving, Williams, who was driving an 18-wheeler, attempted to stop but failed and rear ended a vehicle, causing a chain reaction of three more vehicles colliding.

According to a police report, Williams was spotted by a witness taking a pack of alcoholic beverages out of his cab and throwing them over the side of the interstate immediately following the accident.

The report states Williams was initially charged with felony DUI with death, but the charge was dismissed and changed to reckless homicide.

It was determined by investigators that Williams was traveling too fast for conditions.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office says 27-year-old Lauren Baccari of Charleston died from injuries sustained from the accident.

A police report states that the force of the collision pinned one vehicle under a tractor trailer. The driver of the vehicle died on scene.

The interstate was shut down for a number of hours because of a prior accident involving a hazmat release. Police opened the area up to traffic around 8:26 p.m.
