NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Court records state that two men charged with the murder of a 20-year-old man had originally planned on stealing money from him before the victim was fatally shot.

According to an affidavit, 20-year-old Jalann Lee Williams and 33-year-old Robert Mitchell II had planned to steal money from 21-year-old Akee Ladson during a drug deal on Wednesday in North Charleston.

Authorities say the suspects took drugs from the victim which resulted in a struggle and the shooting. According to court records, Williams confessed to shooting the victim twice.

Both of the suspects were arrested on Thursday and charged with murder. Williams was also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

According to police, an investigation led detectives to identify Williams and Mitchell as suspects. A witness provided information to police which allowed officers to locate Williams in a North Charleston motel, and Mitchell at a home in Hanahan.

North Charleston police say the fatal shooting happened during a drug deal. Officers responded to 6852 Ward Ave. on Wednesday shortly before 6 p.m. regarding possible shots fired in the area. When officers arrived they found a Ford SUV with Ladson inside.

According to an incident report, Ladson was found in the passenger seat leaning over the vehicle's center console. Police say information obtained during an investigation revealed Ladson was at the scene to conduct a drug deal.

Witnesses told police two suspects were seen running from the vehicle towards Willow Lake Apartments after shots were fired.

Williams has been convicted of burglary, possession of a stolen gun and was charged in February of 2011 with attempted murder.

The investigation is ongoing.
