GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the Goose Creek Fire Department say that a fire that damaged several townhomes was an accidental fire.

Several townhomes were damaged and one person was taken to the hospital after a large fire ripped through the S&K Apartments on Farm Road around 8 a.m.

Authorities say the fire started in a downstairs kitchen in one of the units.

Live 5 Reporter Alan Campbell arrived on the scene just after 9 a.m. to find flames shooting through the roofs of two of the townhomes.  Minutes later, the blaze spread to other units.

The American Red Cross said seven apartments were affected, and six were destroyed.

Campbell said the fire appeared to be out by 9:40 a.m., but large amounts of smoke were still prevalent. Firefighters said one person was hospitalized after being overcome by heat and smoke.

Smoke plumes were visible to motorists on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston.  Farm Road was shut down to motorists while fire crews worked to extinguish the flames.
