Former bank teller pleads guilty to embezzling more than $700k

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Court records state that a 59-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $700,000 from a Mount Pleasant Bank of America.

Authorities say Michele Gentry pleaded guilty to embezzlement by a bank employee and filing a false tax return.

Gentry is accused of embezzling the funds when she worked at the bank from 1996 through 2011.

According to U.S. District Court records, Gentry also filed an income tax return for 2007 in May of 2008 and did not report $104,425 that she got from the embezzlement.

On the charge of embezzlement by a bank employee, Gentry faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

The maximum penalty Gentry faces on the false tax return count is 3 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
