CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A portion of King Street in downtown Charleston could see more police officers in the evening hours.
Mayor Joe Riley's $4 million property tax hike includes eight additional police officers to patrol upper King Street between Carolina and George Streets.
Police Chief Greg Mullen says that is a growing area with 57 bars and restaurants that hold liquor licenses. He says they are currently pulling officers in from neighboring communities to manage the area.
"These eight additional officers that we are asking for will allow us to fully outfit the entertainment zone area, and then move those officers that are being pulled down into that area now, back out into the communities," said Mullen.
Mullen said this year's budget included four new hires.
