HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) - Hanahan Middle School has made its way through the Southeast Regional round of the Lexus Eco Challenge as winners for the fourth straight year.
The middle school, which took home $10,000 for winning the Southeast Regional round, will go on to compete in the National Finals in February to compete for $30,000.
Hanahan Middle's winning project centered on spreading the word about the benefits of recycling. To do this, team members created the Caps for a Cause Campaign to collect hard plastic bottle caps.
Recycled caps will turned into a bike rack, bench and picnic table for the school.
The school hopes to collect 50,000 bottle caps by the end of the month.
Team members will travel to the Statehouse in Columbia to attend the Recyclonomics SC Legislative Day on February 20 to spread the word about their project.
Hanahan Middle School is accepting bottle cap donations from the community. Twist caps that do not contain metal can be dropped off in the collection bin located in the lobby of Hanahan Middle School.
