Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stopped all 30 shots he faced to help the South Carolina Stingrays (25-23-1-3) shutout the Toledo Walleye (27-18-0-4) 3-0 at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening.
Stingrays forward Matt Beca opened the scoring on the power play at 17:51 of the first period tipping a rebound inside the left post and over the right pad of Walleye goaltender Kent Simpson (20 saves on 23 shots). Forwards Andrew Cherniwchan and Phil Mangan picked up assists.
Forward Hunter Bishop made it 2-0 at 1:11 of the second frame after his shot from the left-wing circle deflected off the skates for former Stingrays defenseman Phil Oreskovic and past the glove of Simpson. Forward Alex MacLeod and defenseman Cam Brodie registered assists.
Mangan sealed the victory with his 11 goal of the season 7:21 into the third period with help from defenseman Luka Vidmar and Bishop. The Stingrays ended the contest 1-for-5 on the power play while the Walleye went 0-for-3.
