Tyler Hood poured in a game-high 19 points, leading four players in double figures, as Samford completed its first season sweep of The Citadel in program history with a 79-67 victory at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday evening.
Hood, who finished 8-of-11 from the floor and 3-4 from beyond the arc, was joined in double-digit scoring by Tim Williams (17), Raijon Kelly (17) and Clide Geffrard Jr. (11). Samford capped off the victory by hitting 29-of-44 (65.9%) from the floor and in the process moved to 8-16 on the season and 6-5 in Southern Conference play. Four Bulldogs finished with at least one 3-pointer as Samford converted 7-of-17 (41.2%) from beyond the arc.
Among individual statistical leaders for Samford were Kelly, who dished out a game-high six assists, and the duo of Connor Miller and Hood, who climbed the glass for five rebounds apiece. Their rebounding prowess gave the Bulldogs a 30-18 edge over The Citadel in points in the paint.
Mike Groselle and Janeil Jenkins shared team-high scoring honors for The Citadel with 13 points apiece. Matt Van Scyoc notched his 14th double-digit game of the season, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor. Meanwhile, Groselle finished 4-of-10 from the field and was successful on 5-of-6 free throws to go along with five rebounds.
Jenkins was responsible for 13 of The Citadel's 21 bench points after hitting 2-of-2 from the floor and knocking down 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He led a Citadel unit that finished 24-of-27 (88.9%) from the charity stripe, the most conversions this season.
Sophomore guard Ashton Moore dished out a team-high four assists for a Citadel (6-17, 3-10) squad that was successful on 18-of-37 (48.6%) from the floor and 7-of-14 (50%) from the 3-point line.
Facing a 16-point deficit coming out of the locker room, The Citadel opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers by Moore and Marshall Harris III to slice the Samford lead to 50-38 less than two minutes into the half.
After Samford pushed the lead back to 16, following a pair of scores by Williams, The Citadel took advantage of four free throws in a 17 second span to again pull within a dozen. Among those included a series of three free throws by Moore, who drew a foul by Geffrard at the 16:25 mark while in the process of shooting a trey.
Gaining momentum on the offensive end, The Citadel's defense forced a turnover by Geffrard that parlayed into a layup by Groselle and trimmed the margin to 54-44 just over four minutes into the frame.
Hood answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner for the Bulldogs and on the ensuing Citadel possession Harris III drained his second trey of the half to make for a 57-47 difference.
Samford managed to put the game out of reach from that point with a 16-2 run, highlighted by seven points from Hood and six by Geffrard, moving in front 73-49 with 6:30 remaining.
Jenkins singlehandedly netted The Citadel's next 11 straight points as the Bulldogs outscored Samford 13-7 during a 3:57 span of the second half, trimming the lead to 79-62.
The Citadel held Samford scoreless over the final 2:48 of the contest as Horgan and Raemond Robinson accounted for the final five points in the 79-67 loss.
Van Scyoc finished with a team-high 10 points at the intermission to lead a Citadel unit that hit 9-of-19 (47.4%) from the floor and 3-of-7 (42.9%) from beyond the perimeter in the opening frame. However, the story of the first half was the Cadets ability to convert 11-of-12 from the free throw line, highlighted by Groselle's 4-for-4 outing from the charity stripe.
Samford countered with two players in double figures including Hood who finished with a team-high 12 points after hitting 5-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 from 3-point range. Kelly came through with 10 points for the Bulldogs, connecting on 4-of-5 field goals and a pair of free throws. The duo highlighted a Samford unit that converted 17-of-25 (68%) from the floor and three 3-pointers.
Samford matched The Citadel from the line, knocking down 11-of-12, highlighted by a 6-for-7 outing by Wilson.
The Citadel used four points by Groselle and a long distance 3-pointer from Van Scyoc to establish an early 8-5 lead at the 16:45 mark.
Samford responded with a 15-0 run over the next 4:57 of the frame and assumed a 20-8 lead in the process. The Bulldogs established the double-digit lead after getting five points from Hood and four each from Williams and Kelly.
Horgan ended the Cadets' scoring drought with a pair of mid-range jumpers and following a corner trey from Dylen Setzekorn the Samford lead stood at 21-15 with 9:58 remaining.
Hood scored four of the next seven Samford points, stretching the lead to 28-19, as The Citadel was limited to just four free throws during a stretch of 3:06.
Six points off free throws by Harris III, Groselle and Janeil Jenkins made for The Citadel's offensive production as Samford extended its lead to 39-27 with 4:11 remaining in the half.
Van Scyoc accounted for the final five Citadel points, including a 3-pointer from 25-feet away on a pass from Lawrence Miller, as Samford held a 48-32 lead at halftime.
The Citadel returns to action on Thursday evening when it hosts Georgia Southern at 7:05 p.m. Two nights later the Dogs welcome Davidson to McAlister Field House for a 7:05 p.m. contest.
