DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Bond was set at $1,000 for a Durham School Services bus driver arrested on Wednesday accused of striking a child on his route.

According to a report from the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, deputies were contacted by a representative of the Dorchester District 2 Transportation Office on Feb. 8.

When deputies arrived, the representative told them he had received a call from the principal at Knightsville Elementary School, who said a parent notified him of a possible assault on a student on Feb. 7.

Deputies and the representative then viewed video from the incident. After watching the video, both parties agreed they saw 59-year-old Fred Rocquemore, of Summerville, get up from his driver seat, walk up to a student on the bus, and strike him with his hand, a report states.

Deputies then called Rocquemore to the office.

When asked about the incident, a report states Rocquemore first told deputies he did not strike the child, but instead grabbed the child's book bag and placed it in his lap. A deputy then showed Rocquemore the video and explained that it appeared he struck the child.

Rocquemore then became upset and defensive, the report states, and said "he was appalled that he was being accused of striking the child."

Rocquemore was placed on administrative leave on that day, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Due to the size of the child, authorities were not able to determine exactly where he was struck, but during a subsequent interview, the victim told them the bus driver hit him on the arm.

Five days later, Rocquemore was arrested just before 3 p.m. and charged with cruelty to children. He is expected to appear in court for a bond hearing Wednesday afternoon.
