Lowcountry takes part in 'One Billion Rising' movement

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - People gathered at the Cistern Yard at the College of Charleston for the One Billion Rising movement.

The global organization called on men and women in 200 countries to come together on Valentine's Day.

On Thursday, a large group walked hand and hand across the Ravenel Bridge commemorating the movement.

Participants all over the world hold hands, sing, dance and stand together in hopes of stopping the violence that happens every day against women and girls.

Locally, groups like the Sophia Institute, My Sister's House, People Against Rape and several other groups took part.

Organizers say thousands danced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, hundreds chanted in South Africa and the Philippines held a 24-hour dance party.

According to U.N. statistics, one in three women worldwide will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.
