Police: Man wanted for dropping gun during pursuit surrenders

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department says a 20-year-old man wanted for a weapons charge surrendered to authorities Monday afternoon.

Investigators say Jamal Rollerson, accompanied by family members, surrendered around 4 p.m.

Rollerson was wanted for unlawful carrying of a handgun, possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to police, Rollerson was visiting a friend at 13 Athens Court around 6:30 p.m.

An officer approached Rollerson and started questioning him. The officer noticed that he put both hands into his pants pocket and then placed his hands inside of his sweater.

According the officer, she asked Rollerson to remove his hands out of his pockets. Authorities say as another officer pulled up to the scene, Rollerson took off running.

Police say as they observed him running he threw what appeared to be a handgun. Officers were able to retrieve a handgun.
