Charleston Southern head football coach Jamey Chadwell has named Chad Staggs as his defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the Bucs' new head coach announced on Wednesday.
Staggs comes to CSU after spending last season on Chadwell's staff as the defensive coordinator at Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. This will be his fifth season on staff with Chadwell.
"I am pleased to announce Chad Staggs as our linebackers coach and defensive coordinator," Chadwell said on Wednesday. "Chad brings four years of experience of coordinating a defense and has had our defenses consistently ranked at the top of the standings. His aggressive style of defense will fit perfectly with our desire to have a defensive team that plays with purpose and passion. Being from the state of South Carolina, he has several contacts throughout the state that will pay dividends on the recruiting trail. Chad and His wife Kelli will be great ambassadors for Charleston Southern."
Staggs also spent three seasons at North Greenville with Chadwell, building a winning defense that helped the Crusaders advance to the NCAA Div. II Quarterfinal in 2011. In his third year as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at NGU, Staggs added the title of Assistant Head Coach for 2011.
Built with an ‘Attack' Philosophy, Staggs engineered NGU's "Black Swarm" Defense into one of the nations' toughest, ball hawking defenses built on stopping the opponents running game and forcing turnovers. The statistics tell the truth.
Staggs has already built an impressive resume' in 12 years of coaching. He has learned under some of the game's best including Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina and Jim Satterfield at Lexington High School. All three have won NCAA National Championships.
Prior to arriving at NGU in the spring of 2009, Staggs served as the Secondary Coach at FCS Charleston Southern where he tutored All-American Cornerback Philip Ashley. Staggs also coached in all areas of the Buccaneer Special Teams.
Coach Staggs spent five successful seasons as a graduate assistant at USC working with both the Secondary and Linebackers. Staggs coached in two bowl games in his tenure with the Gamecocks ('05 Independence, '06 Liberty).
Before getting his start in college coaching, he enjoyed a successful run as an assistant at Lexington High School where he also coached Track and Field.
Chad is a graduate of USC-Spartanburg and has a degree in Math Education. He also has a Masters in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management from the University of South Carolina. He and his wife Kelli have two children, Gracie and Jack.
