NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The North Charleston Police Department says the suspect who held up a gas station convenience store at knifepoint early Thursday apparently stripped as he fled authorities.

Police say the incident took place at Fuel Express at 5995 Rivers Ave. Thursday at 1:30 a.m.

According to the department's spokesman, Spencer Pryor, the suspect entered the store with knife in hand, went behind the register and demanded money. The suspect had his shirt pulled up covering part of his face.

Pryor says the suspect grabbed money that was sitting on top of the safe and fled the store.

A K-9 team tracked the suspect to the side of Hawthorne Mobile Home park, where the trail ended.  In that area, police talked to a witness who said he saw a man run past him wearing nothing but a pair of boxers.

Crime scene investigators gathered the discarded clothing, which included dark pants, a camouflage hate, and white t-shirt.

The suspect is described as a 40 to 45-year-old white male.

The incident remains under investigation.
