Goose Creek only shot 11-45 from the field on the night, but stellar free throw shooting propelled the Gators to the AAAA state title game with a 57-47 win over Sumter at the Florence Civic Center on Friday night.
The Gators were led by Dantez Bennamon who struggled from the floor shooting just 2 of 17. But he was a perfect 19 of 19 from the line and added 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in the victory. Chris Singleton also added 13 points.
"It was a tough night" Head Coach Blake Hall said "it was our first time playing in an atmosphere like this and I think early on the shell shock really affected us."
Neither team had much luck scoring early on as Sumter held a 10-5 lead after the first quarter. Goose Creek would come back to tie things up at 17 at the half.
But it was Bennamon in the 2nd half who made things happen. Consistently getting to the free throw line and then hitting a big 3 at the start of the 4th quarter that upped the lead to 9. The Gators would never look back.
"That's what he does" Hall said" "he's as good a guard as you'll find at the high school level. He's consistent. And even with having the tough first half he fought back and really got us going in the 2nd half."
The Gators will now go on to face Irmo in the AAAA state finals on Friday in Columbia. The Yellow Jackets got a 63-49 win over Hillcrest on Friday.
