Solicitor introduces new gun violence prosecution

Posted: Updated:
WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) -

Three Beaufort County men are charged with murder, despite the fact prosecutors allege only one of them fired a fatal bullet.

Tyrone Robinson, Aaron Young, Jr. and Aaron Young, Sr. were all indicted for the murder of 8-year-old Khalil Singleton, who was caught in the crosshairs of a violent argument last September on Hilton Head Island.

The charges are an example of a tougher policy on gun violence, 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone said.

The strategy includes charging all alleged shooters with murder, if a death results from a multiple-shooter scenario.

"They think nothing of it," Stone said.  "They think for some reason, if they didn't fire the fatal shot, then they aren't responsible."

Stone said the goal is to reduce the number of drive-by shootings and shootings at nightclubs.  Four shootings occurred at Walterboro nightclub Chase Lounge within the past year.  The latest incident happened last week, when a 52-year-old man was shot to death inside the club.

The new prosecution for gun violence will cover the circuit's territory, which includes: Allensdale, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties.
