MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Mt. Pleasant Town Councilman was arrested Saturday night for driving under the influence after being involved in an accident near the area of Coleman Boulevard and Fairmont Avenue.
Mt. Pleasant police say they responded to the two-car collision around 9:35 p.m.
Authorities say 52-year-old John Burn rear-ended another vehicle at the stoplight.
In a police report, an officer noted an alcohol smell emanating from Burn, who told him he had "a few drinks" that night at a function at Alhambra Hall.
Police also said Burn was speaking with a slurred speech and "couldn't complete simple tasks." The officer said Burn tried to hand him his Town Council card when he asked for identification.
The officer also said he saw what appeared to be wine stains on Burn's shirt.
Burn was charged with DUI and arrested after police said he failed several field-sobriety tests, including one in which he was unable to recite the alphabet from letter D to letter R.
Police said he refused a breathalyzer test at the station.
He went before a bond court judge Sunday and was given a personal recognizance bond.
Burns was elected to the Mt. Pleasant Town Council in 2009 and is currently on the recreation committee.
