Drew DeKerlegand's hot stretch at the plate has earned The Citadel junior left fielder the Southern Conference Player of the Week Award for games played Feb. 25 through March 3.
The Pearland, Texas, product went 9-for-14 (.643) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, eight runs scored, five RBI and a 1.143 slugging percentage to help the Bulldogs go 3-2 for the week. He walked three times and was hit by three pitches for an on-base percentage of .750.
DeKerlegand established a career high with four hits, including a double and triple, in a 7-5 win over UNC Asheville in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader. He matched his career highs with three runs and three RBI and fell a home run shy of the first cycle by a Bulldog since 2000.
He had a three-hit game and scored three runs against Pittsburgh in the opening game of the Charleston Crab House Shootout presented by Homewood Suites on Friday. His solo homer in the bottom of the first gave the Bulldogs the only run they needed in an 8-0 win over the Panthers.
DeKerlegand doubled in a run and scored in an 8-6 loss to Charleston Southern and had a base hit and run scored in an 11-6 defeat to VCU. He also had 10 putouts in left field during the week.
For the season, DeKerlegand is batting .421 (16-for-38) with four doubles, two triples, a home run, 14 runs and seven RBI. He has a slugging percentage of .711 and an on-base mark of .542.
He leads the SoCon in on-base percentage and is tied for second in triples and hit by pitches (four) while ranking fourth in runs, fifth in batting average, seventh in slugging percentage and ninth in total bases (27).
His hot start has lifted his career batting average to .305 (121-for-397) with 27 doubles, seven triples and three home runs in 122 games.
The Citadel is 7-5 on the season and travels to Rock Hill on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game against Winthrop. The Bulldogs open SoCon play this weekend with a three-game series beginning Friday against Samford at Riley Park.
