MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A Mount Pleasant school will become the Lowcountry's only educational center for children with Asperger's and high functioning autism (HFA).
Trident Academy's signature program focuses on kids with language-based learning differences, and they are adding the School for Asperger's and HFA. The move comes after a study which found that Charleston needed a school for students with Asperger's and HFA.
The school announced it will introduce a new program beginning in September that will focus on kids in Kindergarten through second grade that have Asperger's and HFA.
Sandi Clerici, the Interim Head of School for Trident Academy, says the new program is about creating a structured environment that will allow children with these learning differences to excel.
"The things that they need are an environment that is very safe, very patient and very structured in terms of delivering a curriculum that includes not only an academic curriculum but also a social skills curriculum that allows them to develop, gain the confidence and the tools to move out, and become part of the traditional school system, said Clerici.
The plan for Trident Academy's Asperger's and HFA program is to add another grade level every year up to eighth grade.
